Recycled Type 1 Aggregate
Overview
Recycled Type 1 aggregate is a more cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to traditional primary aggregates. Recycled Type 1 is made from crushed concrete, brick, and other building materials which are salvaged from demolition projects and are processed through crushing to make another use for the materials as an alternative to landfill. It provides excellent compaction, making it an ideal sub-base material for roads, paths, car parks, yards and upfilling ground for a solid surface.
Using Recycled Type 1 not only reduces the demand for virgin aggregates but also helps divert construction waste from landfills, contributing to more sustainable construction practices.
What is Recycled Type 1?
Recycled Type 1 is a high-quality sub-base material made from crushed and recycled construction materials such as concrete, brick, and asphalt. After being broken down, the materials are screened and graded to ensure that they meet the necessary size requirements, with all particles typically below 40mm with an oversize of 63mm. This ensures the aggregate compacts well, making it perfect for use as a stable base layer for construction and landscaping projects.
Please note, being a recycled product that is reclaimed from demolition works, colours, types and sizes of materials can vary and may contain fragments of wood, glass and plastic.
Key Benefits of Recycled Type 1
- Sustainable: Made from recycled materials, reducing the need for virgin aggregates and diverting waste from landfills.
- Cost-Effective: More affordable than primary aggregates, while still providing excellent performance.
- Highly Durable: Provides a strong and stable sub-base for various applications.
- Excellent Compaction: Compacts to create a firm, solid base, suitable for both heavy and light loads.
- Multi-Purpose: Can be used for a range of projects where the aesthetic finish of type 1 is not demanded such as sub bases to car parks, building up capping layers and creating hard standing storage areas.
Applications of Recycled Type 1
- Road Sub-Base: Provides a stable and durable foundation layer for roads, pavements, and temporary or haul roads.
- Yards and Car Parks: Ideal for creating a solid sub-base in yards or car parks which can cope with heavy traffic.
- Upfilling and Backfilling Applications: Suitable for upfilling and making up ground as well as backfilling holes as the solid compaction gives a good sub-base.
- Hard Standings: Perfect for hard standings such as storage areas for materials and containers as well as other applications.
Environmental Benefits of Using Recycled Type 1
Density and Coverage of Recycled Type 1
- Density: Recycled Type 1 has an approximate density of 1.8 tonnes per cubic meter.
- Coverage: For most applications, 1 ton of Recycled Type 1 will cover around 10 square meters at a depth of 50mm. For deeper applications, the coverage will reduce accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Recycled Type 1 is made from crushed and recycled materials like concrete and brick, whereas Primary Type 1 is made from newly quarried materials. Recycled Type 1 is more sustainable and more cost-effective but provides similar compaction and durability as primary materials.
Yes, Recycled Type 1 is ideal for creating a firm and stable sub-base for driveways. Its excellent compaction properties make it perfect for high-traffic areas. However, recycled type 1 does not have the same desirability in the aesthetic finish that is left with type 1.
